Road to be Dedicated to Fallen Hero Thanks to Grove Bill

December 9, 2019

DOVER – A Spring Grove man killed in action during the Korean War will be posthumously honored by having a road dedicated to him, Rep. Seth Grove (R-Dover) announced today.

“U.S. Army Cpl. Earl H. Markle was just 19 years old when he gave his life in the service of this great nation,” Grove said. “It is a privilege to help honor this brave soldier and to bring to light his life and sacrifice.”

Markle was serving with the 1st Calvary Division when the unit was attacked during the Battle of Unsan in present day North Korea. Following the battle, Markle was reported missing and, three years later, declared deceased. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and other military honors.

Markle’s remains were unaccounted for until 2019. A year prior, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, at the urging of President Donald Trump, returned Markel’s remains, along with the remains of other U.S. Armed Forces members killed during the Korean War, to American authorities. Markle is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

To date, more than 7,500 Americans who were killed in the Korean War remain unaccounted for.

“It is absolutely tragic American families still do not have closure for their loved ones killed in the war nearly 70 years ago,” Grove said. “I truly hope, and strongly urge, the North Korean government will turn over any additional remains so that our brave American service members can be given the proper burial they so greatly deserve.”

Grove’s House Bill 2017, which was amended into House Bill 1547, designates a portion of Roths Church Road from Little Creek Road to the Officer David D. Tome Memorial Circle as the Corporal Markle Memorial Road.

A dedication ceremony to honor this fallen hero is being planned. Details will be released as they become available.
