York Legislators Agree with Demand for Pension Reform
7/10/2014
HARRISBURG – The members of the York County House Republican delegation, state Reps. Keith Gillespie (R-Hellam), Seth Grove (R-Dover), Ron Miller (R-Jacobus), Mike Regan
(R-Dillsburg), Majority Whip Stan Saylor (R-Red Lion) and Will Tallman (R-Adams/York), today reaffirmed their stance on the need for reforms to Pennsylvania’s public pension system. The members issued the following statement in reaction to Gov. Tom Corbett’s announcement that the budget for fiscal year 2014-15 has been signed into law:

“The York County delegation has been and will continue to be advocates for pension reform. The solution to the problem is simple – create a plan that earns the necessary 102 House votes, 26 Senate votes and one governor’s signature needed for passage into law. The obstructions are the special interest groups that stand in the way of relief Pennsylvania taxpayers need and deserve. We welcome the governor’s leadership in getting the additional votes needed to pass pension reform.

“When speaking of the pension crisis, it is impossible to not also reference the onerous burden of property taxes that impact many but not all regions of the state, as the two topics go hand in hand.

“More than half of the money allocated for public education in the Commonwealth is consumed by a pension system that gets ‘hungrier and hungrier’ by the fiscal year. Our school districts’ only recourse in recovering funding that supports education is through the Pennsylvania property owners. The sooner we cut off that ‘food supply,’ the sooner we free up money that truly benefits our students and future generations.

“To that end, the House approved property tax legislation (House Bill 1189) nine months ago and send it to our Senate colleagues, who have yet to act on it. We would encourage them to move this bill to the governor’s desk as soon as possible, in order to empower those areas of the state negatively impacted by property taxes with a tool to relieve that pressure.”
