Grove Recognizes Y’s Role in Fighting Childhood Obesity
4/14/2011

Rep. Seth Grove (R-Dover) today announced that Saturday, April 16, will be “Y Healthy Kids Day” in Pennsylvania, which will be a day for parents and their children to enjoy healthy physical activity together.

“Obesity is a growing health threat to parents and children,” said Grove.  “Physical fitness and family activity are powerful tools in the fight against diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and the myriad of health problems that result from a sedentary lifestyle and high body mass index.  Fostering an appreciation for physical fitness in children sets them on a path for healthier lifestyles as they become adults.”

One in three children and the majority of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has identified modern American society as “obesogenic,” which means our culture promotes unhealthy choices and physical inactivity.  More information about the problems associated with obesity and what the federal government is doing to promote healthier lifestyles is available at cdc.gov/obesity

Grove sponsored House Resolution 199, which passed the House unanimously, to recognize the efforts of the Y to fight obesity and teach sound fitness practices to adults and children.  More than 70 corporate and 85 Y branches will participate in the Y Healthy Kids Day in Pennsylvania.

Grove, co-chairman of the bicameral, bipartisan YMCA Caucus, noted that participating Y branches will offer health screenings, health fairs, fun runs, family aerobics, obstacle courses, open swims, dance classes and other fun and healthy family activities.  Information about the effort is available at ymca.net/healthy-kids-day.

“I know how difficult it is for parents to find time to exercise with their children,” said Grove.  “The aim of Y Healthy Kids Day is to show that spending time together as a family engaged in physical activity is fun.”
